HOW TO MAKE YOUR CV AND LINKEDIN PROFILE STAND OUT

On the 20th of November, 2021, we hosted our first IG live event on how to make your CV and LinkedIn profile stand out with Simisola Olu, a seasoned consultant in the recruitment space in Nigeria and other African countries. But before we delve in, let’s clear the misconception between CV and resume.

A CV stands for curriculum vitae. It is a document that describes your career in great detail. It is mostly used by academicians or people going for managerial positions. Whereas, a resume is a document tailored for the position of a job. Entry and mid-level professionals use this and are advised to keep it to a page or two.

Here are a few tips. But if you prefer the video replay, watch

  1. Customize your CV for the job you want: Before the main interview, your Cv is the first one. So you should have this in mind when writing. Read the job description carefully and tailor your cv accordingly. Make sure your skills match the key terms in the job description. This would set you apart from other applicants.
  2. Emphasize results rather than responsibilities: Responsibilities refer to your everyday tasks. While results refer to what you achieved in that role. Showing results proves that you know what you’re doing and can set you apart from other applicants. Rather than saying, “write blog posts for the company”, write “increased traffic by 20% to website through SEO powered blog posts.
  3. Add your certifications and licenses: Certifications and licenses demonstrate a passion for the industry. It also gives evidence of your suitability for the position, especially if they are mentioned in the job description. So when applying, you can include the ones that will add value to your job application
  4. Include your LinkedIn profile: Employers in every industry use LinkedIn to find job applicants. It is a professional landing page for you to manage your personal brand. A complete LinkedIn profile will summarize your professional experience to your connections, current and future employers, and recruiters. It is therefore important to make sure your LinkedIn profile highlights your skills and experiences. This way, interested employers can see, at a glance, what makes you the right candidate for the job.
